The Ken-nan Regional Development Bureau area is located in the southern part of Iwate Prefecture and consists of five cities—Oshu, Ichinoseki, Hanamaki, Kitakami, and Tono—and three towns: Nishiwaga, Kanegasaki, and Hiraizumi. This page serves as a regional hub, consolidating access to detailed information pages for each municipality within the area.
The region spans approximately 80 km from east to west and 100 km from north to south, encompassing a diverse landscape shaped by basins, mountains, and river systems between the Kitakami Highlands and the Ou Mountains. Along the Kitakami River basin lie major urban centers such as Hanamaki, Kitakami, and Oshu, while the southern area is home to significant historical and cultural assets, including Hiraizumi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This balance of natural scenery and cultural heritage defines the character of the region.
Influenced by an inland climate, the area experiences relatively low humidity in summer and snowfall mainly in mountainous areas during winter. With the Tohoku Shinkansen, the Tohoku Expressway, and major national highways such as Routes 4 and 107 converging here, the region functions as a key transportation hub for industry, tourism, and logistics in southern Iwate Prefecture. From this area, users can efficiently access a wide range of regional information both within and beyond the prefecture.
