Located on Rishiri Island in northern Hokkaido’s Sōya region, Rishiri Town is a small community where people have long lived in harmony with rugged nature. Its name comes from the Ainu word “ri-sir” meaning “high island,” a reference to the majestic Mt. Rishiri (Rishiri Fuji, 1,721 m), which dominates the landscape. During the Edo period, the area thrived as a trading post under the Matsumae clan, where Ainu and Japanese cultures intertwined. In the Meiji era, full-scale settlement and fishing development began. Today, the economy centers on fishing and tourism. Above all, “Rishiri Kombu” (kelp) is regarded nationwide as a top-class ingredient in Japanese cuisine. Fresh seafood such as sea urchin and scallops also support the town’s culinary traditions. In summer, climbing, hiking, and camping attract visitors, while in winter the harsh climate is turned into a tourism asset with seasonal events. Distinctive dialects and traces of Ainu heritage remain a living part of the community. Local festivals such as the “Rishiri Kombu Festival” and the “Ukishima Festival” unite residents and visitors alike. With its unique blend of nature, culture, and history, Rishiri Town is one of the most distinctive places in northern Japan.

Culture & Traditions

Rishiri Town has been deeply influenced by Ainu culture, whose spirit and traditions continue in local life and rituals. The hardships of settlement during the Meiji era and the expansion of fishing in the 20th century shaped a way of life rooted in coexistence with nature. The town’s pride, Rishiri Kombu, is a cultural and economic pillar, recognized nationwide. Traditional events such as the Ukishima Festival, Senpōshi Shrine Festival, and Kitami Fuji Shrine Festival are not merely tourist attractions but living cultural heritage, preserving age-old faith and community bonds. These festivals showcase local performing arts, parades, and food, embodying the town’s resilience against harsh winters and storms. Beyond festivals, fishing-based food culture, regional dialects, and handcrafts reveal the uniqueness of Rishiri. Visitors can feel both warmth and authenticity in the community’s hospitality and heritage.
