Kembuchi Town, located in the northern part of Kamikawa, Hokkaido, lies along the Teshio River and its tributary, the Kembuchi River. Established as a village in 1897 and later promoted to town status in 1962, Kembuchi has developed as an agricultural community. The town’s economy is based on farming, dairy, and livestock, with large fields producing potatoes, wheat, and beans. Its dairy products and meat are known for their high quality. Kembuchi is also famous as the “Picture Book Town.” Since the opening of the Picture Book House in 1991, which houses picture books from around the world, the town has promoted cultural development centered on picture books. Blessed with rich nature, culture, and warm people, Kembuchi offers visitors peace of mind and new discoveries. Each season showcases a different charm—cherry blossoms in spring, green fields in summer, harvest in autumn, and snow scenery in winter—accompanied by local festivals that connect residents and visitors alike.
Culture and Traditions
The name “Kembuchi” comes from the Ainu language, meaning “alder river mouth,” referring to the once alder-rich area near the confluence of the rivers. Since its pioneering era in the late 19th century, agriculture has been the foundation of life here, and residents have lived in close harmony with nature. The local dialect of Hokkaido adds warmth and familiarity to daily life. In 1989, Kembuchi hosted the International Picture Book Original Art Exhibition, which led to the establishment of the Picture Book House in 1991. Since then, the town has been widely recognized as the “Picture Book Town.” Every year, the “Kembuchi Picture Book Award” is selected by visitor voting, and the town also hosts the “Picture Book Festival,” bringing together authors, illustrators, and fans. Seasonal festivals such as the Summer Festival and Winter Snow Festival also attract visitors and foster community bonds. Combining farming traditions with cultural events, Kembuchi is a place where both nature and people thrive together.
