Culture & Traditions

Hokuryu Town was officially established in 1961 when it transitioned to town status. Since then, agriculture has remained the cornerstone of its development. The sunflower, now the iconic symbol of Hokuryu, is not only grown for ornamental beauty but also processed into cooking oil and honey, making it an integral part of both the economy and daily life. The community is lively and tightly knit, with residents maintaining seasonal customs and speaking in the Hokkaido dialect. Among its cultural highlights is the “Shinryu Shishimai” (Lion Dance), a traditional performance preserved as a designated cultural asset of the town. Seasonal events also mark the cultural calendar, with the “Sunflower Festival” being the most celebrated, bringing together locals and visitors alike in midsummer. In winter, festivals light up the snowy townscape, turning the long cold season into a time of warmth and togetherness. Hokuryu represents a community where tradition, nature, and human connection coexist, offering an authentic glimpse into Hokkaido’s cultural richness.
