Sarabetsu Village, located in the southern part of Kasaishi District in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, is a vast rural area surrounded by the majestic natural beauty of Japan’s northern frontier. The village lies on the eastern foothills of the Hidaka Mountains, where fertile fan-shaped plains stretch outward. Its name comes from the Ainu word “Sara-pet,” meaning “river of reeds,” reflecting the area’s long-standing harmony with nature.
The first settlers arrived from Totsukawa Village in Nara Prefecture during the Meiji period, pioneering this land in the late 19th century. Sarabetsu became an independent municipality in 1947 after separating from Taisho Village. Today, it is known for its large-scale agriculture and dairy farming, boasting one of the largest average farm sizes per household in Japan. The village is also recognized as a “smart agriculture” model area, introducing IoT and automated farming technologies.
With its scenic landscapes, local festivals, and agricultural heritage, Sarabetsu Village offers a rare glimpse of Hokkaido’s natural beauty and community-centered lifestyle that continues to thrive in balance with the land.

Cultural Heritage and Traditions

The culture of Sarabetsu Village is deeply rooted in its agricultural legacy and the cooperative spirit that has supported generations of residents. Life here has always been shaped by the rhythm of nature—residents endure harsh winters and cherish the fertile seasons, working together in a strong community bond.
The main industries are crop farming and dairy production. Local farmers cultivate wheat, potatoes, azuki beans, and sugar beets, while the village’s dairy products are widely praised for their high quality. In recent years, Sarabetsu has gained attention as a “Smart City” initiative site, implementing advanced digital technologies in agriculture and regional transport (MaaS).
