Welcome to Taiki Town, a serene rural area located about 60 km south of Obihiro City in the southern Tokachi region of Hokkaido. Surrounded by the Hidaka Mountains to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east, Taiki is blessed with stunning natural beauty. The Rekifune River, which flows entirely within the town, has been recognized multiple times as the cleanest river in Japan.
The town’s development began in the Meiji era when Benzo Yoda and his pioneering group settled here. Today, Taiki thrives on dairy farming and fishing while also leading Japan’s private space industry under its vision of “Building a Space Town.” The Hokkaido Spaceport, where JAXA and Interstellar Technologies conduct tests and launches, symbolizes its forward-looking spirit.
Despite this futuristic ambition, Taiki remains deeply connected to nature and Ainu cultural traditions. Its festivals, cuisine, and community embody a harmonious blend of history and innovation, making it a truly unique destination in Hokkaido.
Culture & Traditions
Taiki’s culture is a fascinating mix of Ainu heritage and frontier pioneer history. The town’s name derives from the Ainu word “Tayki-ushi-i,” meaning “a place with many fleas,” based on an old local legend. The town maintains the Ainu spirit of living in harmony with nature, reflected in its festivals, language, and daily life.
Locals communicate warmly using the Hokkaido dialect, fostering a close-knit community spirit. Annual festivals such as the Rekifune River Clear Stream Festival and the Taiki Snow Festival bring the town alive with traditional performances and local delicacies. Young residents are also actively involved in promoting the town’s culture, combining traditional customs with modern creativity through social media and events.
Taiki stands as a living example of how tradition and innovation can coexist, preserving its heritage while embracing new possibilities for the future.
Local Specialties
