Culture & Traditions

Kamishihoro Town was established in 1931, when it separated from Shihoro Village, following the pioneering expansion of the Tokachi region in the Meiji era. The opening of the Shihoro railway line during the Showa era brought greater accessibility, supporting growth in agriculture and tourism. Today, farming remains the backbone of the town’s economy, with dairy production being its greatest pride. The pristine water from the Daisetsuzan mountains and expansive pastures contribute to the exceptional quality of local milk, cheese, and branded beef, all of which are highly valued nationwide.

Daily life here is closely tied to nature. Winter brings skiing and snow activities, while summer is spent enjoying the vast landscapes and outdoor leisure. Residents continue to use local dialects and preserve traditional food culture. Events such as the “Hokkaido Balloon Festival” and “Winter Balloon Meeting” bring the community together while attracting domestic and international visitors.

Community bonds are another defining feature. Seasonal festivals and local activities play an important role in deepening connections among residents. Living in harmony with nature, cherishing seasonal changes, and passing down traditions to future generations define the spirit of Kamishihoro Town.
