Mukawa Town, located in the eastern part of the Iburi General Subprefectural Bureau of Hokkaido, is widely known across Japan as the “Town of Shishamo.” The Mukawa River, which runs through the town, nurtures abundant water resources that have long supported both fishing and agriculture. Especially in the lower reaches, the “Mukawa Shishamo” is regarded as a symbolic specialty of the town. In addition, the inland Hobetsu area is famous for numerous fossil discoveries, including the full skeleton of the “Mukawa Dragon,” one of the largest dinosaurs ever found in Japan. Within this environment where nature and history intertwine, people harmonize traditional culture with modern life. The spirit of Ainu culture is still present, reflected in local dialects and festivals. Visitors can enjoy a lifestyle blessed with nature and rich food culture while experiencing the deep history and traditions of the region.
