Morioka Regional Development Bureau Overview

The Morioka Regional Development Bureau area is located in the northwestern part of Iwate Prefecture and consists of three cities and five towns: Morioka City, Hachimantai City, Takizawa City, Shizukuishi Town, Kuzumaki Town, Iwate Town, Shiwa Town, and Yahaba Town. This page serves as a regional hub page, consolidating navigation paths to detailed pages for each municipality within the area.

The region spans approximately 60 kilometers from east to west and 80 kilometers from north to south, covering about one quarter of Iwate Prefecture’s total land area. It is situated near the geographical center of the three northern Tohoku prefectures. Bordered by the Kitakami Highlands to the east and the Ou Mountains to the west, the area is characterized by prominent mountain ranges, including Mount Iwate, and a rich natural environment shaped by the Kitakami River river system.

Due to its inland climate, summers are relatively cool and comfortable, while winters bring significant snowfall, particularly in the western mountainous areas. As a result, the region is well known as one of Japan’s leading ski resort areas. In addition, with the Tohoku Shinkansen, Akita Shinkansen, Tohoku Expressway, and major national highways concentrated in the area, it functions as a major transportation hub and serves as a gateway for accessing information on destinations throughout Iwate Prefecture.
