Nishiwaga Town is located in the central-western part of Iwate Prefecture and belongs to Waga District. It borders Kitakami City to the east and Akita Prefecture to the west, forming a mountainous inland area deep within the Ou Mountain Range. The town is surrounded on three sides by mountains rising over 1,000 meters, while the Waga River flows north to south through the center, creating a narrow valley-shaped settlement pattern. Due to this topography, Nishiwaga is known as one of Japan’s heaviest snowfall areas, with cumulative snowfall in winter sometimes exceeding 10 meters.
Nishiwaga Town was established in 2005 through the merger of the former Yuda Town and Sawauchi Village. The town preserves a lifestyle shaped by severe winter conditions while actively utilizing its rich natural environment, hot springs, and snow resources. It is a quiet mountain community where nature, history, and warm local culture coexist.

History

The Nishiwaga area has a long history of human settlement, as evidenced by archaeological sites such as the Oodaino Paleolithic site discovered within the town. From medieval times onward, mountain routes connecting inland regions with the Sea of Japan coast passed through the area, giving it importance as a transportation corridor. During the Edo period, the region came under the control of the Morioka Domain, with Yuda developing around hot springs and mining, while Sawauchi relied mainly on agriculture and forestry.
On November 1, 2005, Yuda Town and Sawauchi Village were merged to form Nishiwaga Town. Since then, the town has focused on maintaining essential services, preserving its cultural heritage, and promoting sustainable development by integrating tourism, welfare, and snow-country lifestyles.

Culture & Traditions

Nishiwaga’s culture has been deeply shaped by its heavy snowfall and mountainous environment. Traditional knowledge related to winter survival and snow management continues to influence daily life. The town is also known for innovative snow utilization projects, such as snow-cooled facilities and the “Snow Tunnel,” which demonstrate how snow is treated as a valuable local resource.
The former Sawauchi Village gained national recognition for its progressive welfare policies under the philosophy of “respect for life,” which continues to influence community values today. Traditional performing arts such as demon sword dances (Onikenbai) and local kagura are preserved, while cultural events, theater performances, and concerts are held at Nishiwaga Town Cultural Creation Center (Galaxy Hall).
