Culture and Traditions

Since the Meiji era, Mombetsu has developed as an important settlement along the Okhotsk coastline. Today, it is one of Hokkaido’s major fishing hubs, particularly famous for scallops and crabs. Around the port, visitors can find seafood processing plants, fish markets, and restaurants serving freshly caught delicacies. The residents’ lives are deeply tied to the sea, and traditional rituals are held to pray for safety and a good fishing season.

In winter, the city hosts the “Okhotsk Drift Ice Festival,” attracting visitors nationwide with its magnificent ice sculptures and fireworks. During summer, the “Mombetsu Port Festival” fills the streets with parades, food stalls, and seaside fireworks that light up the night sky. These local festivals strengthen community bonds and provide lively encounters between locals and travelers. Throughout the year, Mombetsu residents live in harmony with nature, celebrating each season through cuisine made from fresh local ingredients. From the bounty of the Okhotsk Sea to the warmth of its people, Mombetsu embodies the very essence of northern living.

Local Specialties

  • Scallops: Mombetsu is one of Hokkaido’s leading scallop-producing areas. The scallops, grown in the cold waters of the Okhotsk Sea, are thick and sweet. At local markets and the roadside station “Michi-no-Eki Okhotsk Mombetsu”, visitors can enjoy fresh or grilled scallops and take home frozen products as souvenirs.
  • Hair Crab: Known for its rich flavor and creamy crab miso, the hair crab from Mombetsu is a winter delicacy. It is widely featured in the “Drift Ice Festival” and the annual “Crab Festival,” where visitors can taste freshly boiled crabs straight from the fishing boats.
  • Okhotsk Mombetsu White Curry: This unique local dish represents the region’s snow and drift ice. Made with local milk and scallops, it is a creamy, flavorful white curry served at several restaurants in the city.
  • Dairy Products: The surrounding area of Mombetsu is an important dairy region. Local products such as cheese and butter—especially from the Yotsuba Dairy Products Okhotsk Factory—are known for their rich, mild taste and are distributed throughout Japan.
  • Mineral Water: The underground spring water from the Shokotsu River basin is bottled as natural mineral water, offering a clean, refreshing taste that captures the essence of Mombetsu’s pristine environment.
